Tapered columns are wider at the base (bottom) of the shaft and narrower towards the neck (top). There are two types of taper.
Entasis: the lower one third is straight with a gradual tapering of the upper two thirds.
Straight: a progressive taper from the bottom to the top.

Non-Tapered columns are straight and uniform in size from top to bottom.

Plain columns have a smooth surface and do not exhibit any architectural details.

Fluted columns exhibit vertical grooves (or channels) in the shaft of the column.

Raised-Panel columns exhibit a contoured groove creating a three-dimensional panel in the center of the column shaft.

Recessed-Panel columns exhibit a contoured groove surrounding a flat-panel in the center of the column shaft.
